Cayenne Peppers Improve Our Health

When foods are laced with capsaicin, the natural substance in hot peppers like cayenne, their flavor seems intensified. Capsaicin, however, doesn't activate the taste buds and has no intrinsic flavor of its own. Instead, it stimulates the trigeminal nerve, which has branches supplying the eyes, nose, tongue, and mouth. This stimulation results in a release of endorphins, which creates a sense of well-being and increased pleasure. The overall effect makes the eating experience more intense and the food seem more flavorful.

Other benefits of the capsaicin in cayenne peppers include improved digestion and an ability to naturally decongest. Also, scientists at Oxford Polytechnic in Great Britain found that hot spices can help you lose weight, because your metabolic rate (the rate at which calories are burned in the body) increases every time you eat capsaicin. Cayenne peppers can increase metabolism by 25 percent.

In the not-too-distant past, capsaicin was used as a preservative and now it is also used topically as an ingredient in pain relief rubs. Cayenne pepper plays multiple roles in helping to protect and improve our health, and it tastes good too!
