Chalk up another
astonishing victory for curcumin. Curcumin, found in the yellow curry spice
turmeric (and in Stop Aging Now! supplements) can block the development of an
autoimmune disease in mice that is very similar to multiple sclerosis. The
animals, in fact, are bred to be stand-ins for studying multiple sclerosis in
humans.
Vanderbilt
University researchers injected low doses of curcumin in such animals three
times a week for 30 days. Amazingly, those getting 50-microgram shots of
curcumin showed only minor symptoms of the MS-like disease, such as temporary
stiffness of their tails. Those getting double the dose were completely
unaffected by the disease.
In startling
contrast, animals not given curcumin were completely paralyzed by the MS-like
disease in both hind limbs within 15 days!
Researcher
Chandramohan Natarajan noted that multiple scelerosis is "very, very
rare" among Asians who eat lots of curry dishes. The amounts given to the
animals were not high-but roughly equivalent to those in a typical Indian
diet.
Nobody knows why
curcumin was so dramatically effective and the study is preliminary. MS patients
should follow their doctors advice for treatment, and the curry spice is not a
therapeutic "miracle" drug by any means. But Natarajan said if
MS-patients wanted to add curry spices to their diet, it couldn’t hurt and
might help.
And that’s not the
