BOSTON (CBS.MW) -- Shares of biotechnology concern Dendreon skyrocketed as much as 40 percent Thursday morning, following news that its prostate cancer drug Provenge proved to be highly effective in late-stage clinical trials.

Dendreon (DNDN) shares were trading up 32 percent at $10.51 Thursday amid a day of mixed trading for the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors.

Dendreon said earlier Thursday that its drug Provenge produced unusually high survivability rates in men with advanced prostate cancer during a Phase III clinical trial.

The company asserted that the survivability rate for Provenge is the highest ever observed for a drug for advanced prostate cancer in any Phase III study.

About 30,000 men die of prostate cancer annually in the U.S., according to the company.

Provenge has already been awarded fast-track status by the Food and Drug Administration, meaning that the agency will take only six months to decide whether to approve the drug if and when its final application is submitted.

According to analyst Paul Latta of McAdams, Wright and Ragen, Provenge's strong data will give Dendreon the upper hand in any negotiations with potential pharmaceutical partners interested in marketing the drug.
