Source: healthdiary.com Unlike most men with prostate cancer, 63-year-old Jimmy Cato of Oakland, California has decided against surgery or radiation to treat his prostate cancer. Instead, the African American linguistics professor has chosen a radically different approach called "watchful waiting," a method combining healthy lifestyle changes, like yoga, exercise, and a low-fat vegetarian diet. Prostate cancer kills one man every 14-minutes in the United States. 140,000 men will be diagnosed with the disease this year. And despite the prevalence of this type of cancer, men do not have many good options for treating it. Because the prostate is located with in a bundle of nerves below the bladder, invasive treatments have a high complication rate. One in eight men experience incontinence or impotence. "I had read that to have it surgically removed, if you don't have 'the best there is' if a nerve is cut, my manhood would be cut," Jimmy said. Jimmy enrolled in a study directed by Dr. Dean Ornish of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in San Francisco. Half the men will simply have their cancer monitored while the other half makes radical changes in their lifestyle: they practice yoga to manage stress, exercise every day, eat a low-fat vegetarian diet, and participate in group support. "Now you might ask why in the world would someone who knows they have prostate cancer not get treated. And the answer is because as in heart disease, there are no randomized trials showing that any of the conventional treatments for prostate cancer prolong life or prevent spread of disease." Dr. Ornish also says surgery may remove the tumor, but 30 percent of the time, the tumor comes back within five years. A year-and-a-half after beginning the trial, the size of Jimmy's prostate tumor has remained very small. And he believes he's reaped many more benefits from the program. The lifestyle changes have improved his relationship with his wife and helped him look younger. "I'm 63," Jimmy said. "It just warms my heart when someone says to me, 'you look like you haven't changed in 'X' number of years.'"
