April 13 2000. White tea, known mostly to tea connoisseurs, may have the strongest potential of all teas for fighting cancer, according to Oregon State University researchers. They presented the first research ever on white tea March 29th at a national meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Among the rarest and most expensive varieties of tea, white tea is produced almost exclusively in China. It belongs to the same species (Camellia sinensis) as other tea plants, but has a higher proportion of buds to leaves. The buds are covered by silvery hairs, giving the plant a whitish appearance.

Some teas are processed more than others. White tea is rapidly steamed and dried, leaving the leaves “fresh.” Green tea, composed of mainly leaves, is steamed or fired prior to being rolled. Oolong and black teas get their dark color and flavor from additional processing.

The researchers think that processing may play a part in tea’s cancer-fighting potential. The key is a class of chemicals called polyphenols.

"Many of the more potent tea polyphenols ('catechins') become oxidized or destroyed as green tea is further processed into oolong and black teas," says Roderick H. Dashwood, Ph.D., a biochemist in the university’s Linus Pauling Institute and principal investigator of the study. "Our theory was that white tea might have equivalent or higher levels of these polyphenols than green tea, and thus be more beneficial."

Chemical analysis confirmed their theory. White tea contains the same types of polyphenols as green tea, but in different proportions. Those present in greater amounts may be responsible for white tea’s enhanced cancer-fighting potential, says Dashwood.

Lab tests on four varieties of white tea showed that it may prevent DNA mutations, the earliest steps leading to cancer. The researchers say that their latest data indicate that white tea may protect against colon cancer in particular.

The researchers say more studies are needed to determine whether white tea actually protects people against cancer. “White tea, and tea in general, is a healthy alternative to other popular drinks, such as sodas,” says Dashwood. “But to be on the safe side, one should maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, regular exercise, and avoidance of smoking.”

Dr. Dashwood is Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology at Oregon State University. He also is Principal Investigator with the university’s Linus Pauling Institute. Dr. Santana-Rios is a post-doctoral Research Associate with the Linus Pauling Institute.

Green tea — Drink at least 4 cups a day or take a standardized extract. Green tea inhibits cancer cell growth and induces apoptosis (programmed cell death).

Green Tea is significant in cancer research. Many studies and tests are being done and have found green tea to be an antioxidant and anti-carcinogen. It inhibits the formation of the cancer-inducing compound, N-nitrosation. Therefore, it is being studied as a prevention for esophageal cancer, digestive tract cancer, pancreas cancer, rectal cancer, small intestine cancer, skin cancers, hepatic cancer, pulmonary cancer, leukemia, and others, which are still being tested.

Green Tea  Kills Prostate Cancer Cells

April 1998. Green tea contains compounds that kill prostate cancer cells. Most people in the USA and around the world drink black tea, if they drink tea at all. Only about a quarter of all tea drunk is green. Both kinds of tea leaves are from the same plant, the evergreen shrub Camellia sinens. Black tea is made from the withered, fermented leaves. The leaves sold as green tea have been steamed after picking, and are not fermented. This makes a difference. Green tea, evidence suggests, is more potent in anti-cancer ingredients.

All plants contain compounds called polyphenols. These are especially high in tea, coffee, red grapes, kidney beans, raisins, prunes, and red wine."greentea_science.html" In December 1997 researchers at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine reported that an ingredient in the polyphenols in green tea kills cancer cells while sparing healthy cells.

The researchers tested this ingredient, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, on human and mouse prostate cancer cells and on normal human skin cells.
It caused apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. A report is in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (Dec 17, 1997).

The scientist in charge, Hasan Mukhtar, says the compound kills cancer cells by fragmenting their DNA - typical of apoptosis. Apoptosis happens all the time in a healthy body. Mukhtar says: "It is likely that this compound conveys a message to cancer cells through a highly ordered and well-regulated signal transduction pathway.... " The chemical messenger tells the cells "'You must commit suicide (programmed cell death) or I am going to kill you.' The cells then decide that instead of being murdered, they will commit suicide."

Mukhtar believes study of green tea will lead to fuller understanding of the process of apoptosis. Researchers will try to decipher the molecular mechanism of green tea's protective effects. They will try to find out how to interfere with cancer development by administering purified polyphenolic derivatives, said Mukhtar. "Green tea appears to be potentially an ideal agent for chemoprevention." The investigators want to run clinical trials to see if indeed green tea can prevent cancer in humans.

A nutritional trial for prostate cancer including green tea in the diet is ongoing at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York.

Teas: Green Tea and Black Tea contain certain antioxidants known as polyphenols (catechins) which appear to prevent cancer cells from dividing. Green tea is best, followed by our more common black tea (herbal teas do not show this benefit). According to a report in the July 2001 issue of the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, these polyphenols that are abundant in green tea, red wine and olive oil, may protect against various types of cancer. Dry green tea leaves, which are about 40% polyphenols by weight, may also reduce the risk of cancer of the stomach, lung, colon, rectum, liver and pancreas, study findings have suggested.

Sip green tea. Green tea is the traditional beverage of Japan and China and appears to reduce cancer in general including prostate cancer. Green tea contains an antioxidant called EGCG which not only kills prostate cancer cells in test tubes but also appears to inhibit enzymes that promote prostate and breast cancer. Suggest you substitute green tea for coffee, black tea or colas. Decaffeinated green tea is also available and still retains its antioxidant affect.

Terrific Teas

Studies have linked both green and black tea to a reduced risk of many cancers, including those of the lung, colon, stomach, skin, breast and pancreas. Drinking large quantities of green tea (up to 6 cups a day) may explain why Japanese men have a lower risk of dying from prostate cancer or developing lung cancer than people in the West.

A particularly potent polyphenol (EGCG) in green tea is 20 times more potent against free radicals than the known vitamin. It also blocks an enzyme that’s responsible for cancer’s spread and has the ability to help trigger cancer cell death.

Green Tea. Another staple of Asian populations.

  • · An excellent source of polyphenols, which restrict the activity of cancer-related enzymes inhibiting growth and promoting apoptosis (cancer cell death). (Various cancers)
  • · Antioxidant. (General cancer prevention and rheumatoid arthritis).
  • · Green tea is typically lower in caffeine than black teas.
  • · How much? Literature is uncertain. We are drinking 4-6 cups/day.

"Tea can fight against emerging cancer cells"

"American scientists have found that drinking five small cups of tea a day can help to boost the immune system and possibly fight against emerging cancer cells. The alkylamine antigens present in tea, are also found in some bacteria, parasites, tumor cells and fungi. When the human immune system has previously been exposed to the antigen (by drinking tea), a much greater defense response is initiated against the bacteria, parasite, tumor or fungi."

The latest tea discovery? Strong evidence that both green and black tea can fight cancer-at least in the test tube-though green tea holds a slight edge. In a new study, both teas kept healthy cells from turning malignant after exposure to cancer-causing compounds.

"People who drink about 4 cups of green tea a day seem to get less cancer.  Now we may know why."

In recent test-tube studies, a compound called EGCG, a powerful antioxidant in tea, inhibited an enzyme that cancer cells need in order to grow. The cancer cells that couldn't grow big enough to divide self-destructed.  It would take about 4 cups of green tea a day to get the blood levels of EGCG that inhibited cancer in the study. Black tea also contains EGCG, but at much lower concentrations. "Green tea extract may prevent breast cancer cells from manufacturing the new blood vessels necessary to promote cancer cell growth"

Writing in a recent issue of the International Journal of Cancer, the USC researchers noted that the reduction in breast cancer risk among the green tea drinkers held true even among women who had a family history of breast cancer as well as among women who smoked or ate processed foods. Exercise habits - either good or bad - also did not play a role in the outcome for green tea drinkers.

The conclusions of this study support the important results of a 2002 laboratory study. According to a report in Science News, researchers at the University of California and the University of Texas found that green tea extract may prevent breast cancer cells from manufacturing the new blood vessels necessary to promote cancer cell growth. If further research confirms these findings, it may help explain why the green tea drinkers in the USC study were at lower risk of breast cancer, regardless of other health, diet, and family history factors.
